CAN BATTERERS GET HELP?

ARE THERE SERVICES FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENDERS?

Safe Horizon’s Domestic Violence Accountability Program (DVAP) is a 26-week educational program for domestic violence offenders. DVAP is an appropriate referral for court-mandated men and provides an additional disposition for the court or other mandating agencies.

DVAP’s classes for men offers a fully developed curriculum about men’s violence against women and how to end it in our communities. The course includes information about the historical, social, and cultural aspect of domestic violence with an emphasis on accountability and personal choice. This is because men’s abuse of their female partner’s is rooted in history, laws and cultures that have entitled men to act abusively and violently toward women. Men’s abuse against their female partners will stop when the entire community recognizes domestic violence as a human rights violation and a social justice issue, rather than as an individual mental health or relational problem.

It is important to understand that these classes or any ‘program’ are not a guarantee that a domestic violence offender will stop his abusive and controlling behavior. Men are making a choice to abuse their partners. Men have to make the choice to stop. Any man who chooses to stop all acts of domestic violence is—and always has been—able to do so. The domestic violence offender has to want to—and be willing to—live his life differently. Although men are capable of stopping abusive and intimidating behaviors, most men continue to use some form of abuse to maintain control over their partner during and after attending these classes. Women who are interested in more information regarding what batterer education classes can and can’t do should see our DVAP Partner’s Guide.
