PRACTICAL AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Being the victim of a crime can leave you feeling emotionally unstable, but it also can leave you in need of assistance providing food and clothing for your family, getting your home locks changed, or paying for losses incurred because of the crime. Safe Horizon can help you with these and other practical issues like transportation to and from court and can assist you in getting reimbursement from the New York State Crime Victims Board. Safe Horizon can also provide cellular phones that dial 911.

Assistance with the Crime Victims Board
If you are a victim of a crime and have filed a report with the police, you may be eligible for reimbursement for crime-related expenses from the New York State Crime Victims Board. Safe Horizon can help you fill out the application. The Crime Victims Board typically reimburses for such out-of-pocket expenses as: medical and funeral expenses, loss of earnings or support, counseling, crime scene clean-up expenses, the cost to repair or replace items of essential personal property, and reasonable court transportation expenses.

Lock replacement
We know how important it is for you to be safe and feel safe in your own home. If you have filed a police report, our Project SAFE team will install new locks and/or cylinders in your doors. If you are a victim of domestic violence, we will also install window guards on all of your windows. Call the hotline to set up an appointment.

Restitution
You may be eligible for reimbursement of financial losses from the person who committed the crime against you. We will work with you to help you assess and collect evidence to document your current and projected financial losses resulting from the crime, for example: emergency transportation to a hospital, medication and medical supplies, replacement of eyeglasses or hearing aids, costs of replacing locks, rental of physical therapy equipment (e.g., wheelchairs), and relocation expenses. We will also take responsibility for collecting the payments once the Judge has agreed to them so that you do not need to be in contact with the offender.

To access any of these services, please call the hotline.
