Safe Horizon: Providing Immediate and Critical Support to the victims of 9-11-01
Since September 11, 2001, Safe Horizon has responded to the needs of individuals affected by the World Trade Center Tragedy by providing them with both financial and emotional support. The following is a brief list of the services that we are currently offering:
Safe Horizon Family and Borough Assistance Centers
Safe Horizon was the first organization providing immediate financial assistance and crisis counseling to those impacted by the World Trade Center Tragedy at the Family Assistance Center in Manhattan and at four additional centers throughout the boroughs. At the Centers staff members help those impacted by the attacks apply for emergency compensation to cover immediate expenses, funeral expenses, and provide them with case management, individual counseling, support groups, and referrals. This effort is supported by the New York State Crime Victims Board (CVB) and the United Way/New York Community Trust September 11th Fund. Safe Horizon has distributed more than 64,000 checks to more than 45,000 individuals totaling more than $100 million.
Safe Horizon September 11th Support Hotline
Safe Horizon is operating the 24-hour September 11th Support Hotline which provides information, referrals, and support to all who were impacted by the events of September 11th, particularly families who lost loved ones, impacted workers, and displaced residents. Trained Safe Horizon staff offer current and comprehensive information about a range of services in the tri-state area including financial assistance, counseling and mental health services, employment resources, legal services, and anti-bias programs. The hotline has served as a resource for more than 100,000 callers.
Trauma Support in the Community
As a Project Liberty provider, Safe Horizon is offering Response and Renewal Groups for schools, businesses, and organizations whose employees might be experiencing trauma-related symptoms as a result of the attack. Our trained teams are available to meet with staff, provide group and individual support focused on coping strategies and how to access additional help. Safe Horizon's teams have helped more than 180 organizations and more than 5,000 individuals. Safe Horizon has also developed a training curriculum for crisis support workers on our community trauma response model. Our Safe Horizon Counseling Center, a licensed mental health program specializing in trauma counseling, also offers individual, family, or group therapy.
