Thousands of New Yorkers will gather at the Great Lawn in Battery Park on Sunday, October 6th at 11AM Opening Ceremony, 12noon kick-off, for the
4th Annual Domestic Violence Walk/Run. The 5K walk commemorates October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, offering hope to victims and celebrating survivors.
Commissioner Yolanda Jimenez, from the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence, will be speaking at the Opening Ceremony in addition to a domestic violence survivor. Following the closing ceremony there will be live music, interactive self-defense and dance workshops, and fun activities for the kids.
Participants are invited to form a team or to walk/run individually. Proceeds from the Walk/Run will be used to support domestic violence service providers in the New York City area. Funds also support an emergency assistance pool as well as educational scholarships for victims of domestic violence.
Event co-chairs include: Center for the Elimination of Violence in the Family, Coalition of Battered Women's Advocates, Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, The Junior League of the City of New York, National Council of Jewish Women NY Section, Omega Phi Beta Sorority, Safe Horizon, and Sanctuary for Families. Sponsors are Philip Morris Companies, Liz Claiborne, American Express and WBLS-FM radio.
