Course Descriptions

Community Trauma Response Training
This training is funded by a grant from the NY Times 9-11 Neediest Fund.
• This two-day training in crisis response addresses on-going issues relating to the attacks of September 11th and their aftermath. Some people have healed -- others are still suffering greatly from the effects of 9-11.
• Community Trauma Response Training offers basic knowledge of trauma, outreach, assessment and referral skills. At the same time it sets clear limits on the role and responsibility of community service providers.
• The training also explores ways in which previous trauma affects those in crisis and how issues of domestic violence, child abuse and substance abuse may increase in the wake of disaster, further complicating the healing process.

Children, Trauma and Grief: How to Help
This training is funded by a grant from September 11th Children’s Fund.
• Building on the CTR model this training focuses on the special needs of children and their caregivers in the wake of trauma, giving special consideration to the impact of the September 11 attacks on children who lost loved ones.
• Training will include basic knowledge of trauma and bereavement and how the two interact in cases of traumatic bereavement in children. This training teaches community providers how to respond appropriately to the special needs of children according to different ages and developmental stages. The impact on healing of previous trauma such as domestic violence and child abuse will also be addressed.
• Skills building focuses on how to communicate with children and how to assess a child’s needs in the context of the family system.

Participants whose work involves families and children may want to register for both trainings.
Please note that Community Trauma Response
