Losing a family member to homicide is a devastating experience. You may feel overwhelmed by feelings of grief, shame, and isolation. The stigma associated with murder often makes it difficult for surviving family members to find solace among their friends or within their community. Safe Horizons Families of Homicide Victims Program has been helping people cope with the murder of loved ones since 1979. Our experienced counselors are here to help you cope with your emotions and assist you with the practical issues that arise, including funeral expenses and assistance navigating the criminal justice system. The program also offers support groups with others who have had similar experiences. Our services, locations, and contact information are listed below.
At Families Of Homicide Victims program, we provide the following services:
Assistance with applications to the Crime Victims Board (CVB) CVB is a New York State program that offers financial assistance to people who have lost a loved one due to a homicide. Survivors may be eligible for burial expenses and/or compensation for lost earnings.
Advocacy As a liaison between families, police, offices of the district attorney, department of correction and division of parole, FOHV will help you and your family stay informed about your case.
Accompaniment FOHV will accompany you and your family to court. We offer emotional support and guidance on how to navigate the criminal justice system.
Individual and Family Counseling
Support Groups
Educational Presentations and Technical Assistance FOHV is available to educate communities and service providers on the issues faced by individuals may face when they lose a loved one to homicide.
To Help the Healing Process The healing process can be lengthy and varies from person to person. The most important point to remember is to take care of yourself. The following suggestions may help:
Expect to have good and bad days.
Share your feelings with others.
Express your feelings through writing or physical activity.
Give yourself permission to laugh, cry and get angry.
Concentrate on living.
Get plenty of rest.
Eat regularly, even if you dont feel like it.
Do the things that make you feel good.
Forgive yourself.
